The Dholera Kalpsar Project is a flagship initiative aimed at transforming Gujarat’s coastline into a sustainable and resilient region. This large-scale project will focus on the creation of the Kalpsar Lake, a vast water reservoir that will provide much-needed water security for the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). By storing and regulating water from the Sabarmati River, the project aims to support both agricultural and urban development, contributing to Dholera’s growth as a global smart city.
The Kalpsar Project will establish a massive lake to store water, ensuring consistent water supply for agriculture and urban development.
Key infrastructure will be put in place to protect the region from environmental risks such as rising sea levels, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Dholera.
The project will leverage hydroelectric power generation, using the dam infrastructure to meet the region’s growing energy demands sustainably.
Significant progress has been made in terms of feasibility studies. As of 2018, INR 250 crores had been invested in feasibility studies and surveys. By July 2019, 25 out of 43 feasibility studies were completed, focusing on ecological, environmental, social, and financial impacts. The remaining 10 surveys are expected to be completed by 2021-23.
The Bhadhut Barrage, a smaller but critical component of the project, is set to begin construction in 2020. Meanwhile, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Kalpsar Dam was planned to be completed by 2018, but no environmental or other clearances were obtained by that time. These processes are expected to be finalized before construction begins.
Ensures a consistent and sustainable water supply for both agricultural irrigation and urban needs, addressing the growing demands of Dholera SIR.
The project is designed to minimize environmental damage, with careful attention to preserving coastal biodiversity and managing water resources efficiently.
As part of the infrastructure backbone of Dholera SIR, the project will ensure that the region has the necessary resources to support rapid urbanization, industry, and residential growth.
The Kalpsar Project is integral to Dholera’s long-term sustainability, offering significant benefits for the region’s agriculture, energy, and urbanization. By stabilizing water resources, the project will increase agricultural productivity, while providing vital water for industries and urban development. Moreover, its focus on environmental sustainability ensures that the project will not only meet present needs but also protect the region for future generations.
By harnessing advanced technologies for water management, energy generation, and coastal protection, the Dholera Kalpsar Project will lay the foundation for a resilient and self-sufficient Dholera SIR.
The Dholera Kalpsar Project is more than just a water management initiative; it is a cornerstone of the sustainable development of the Dholera region. The project will ensure that Dholera has the resources it needs to become a global manufacturing and trade hub, while supporting the agricultural sector and creating a climate-resilient urban environment. It will be a beacon of modern urban planning and development, contributing to India’s vision of creating smart cities equipped for the future.
